Mosquitoes – Annoying AND Dangerous
When we think of mosquitoes, we often think of the incessant buzzing in our ears, the hundreds of times we slap our arms and legs in warm weather and the red, raised, itchy bites they cause.
But mosquitoes are more than just an annoyance, they can spread dangerous diseases.
Mosquitoes are capable of carrying and transmitting malaria, even in the United States. And if a mosquito is infected with a virus, it can transmit encephalitis, meningitis, West Nile and more to humans.
Mosquitoes have brief life spans, but they reproduce quickly. And all female mosquitoes feed on blood, both human and animal.
Children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are often particularly susceptible to diseases carried by mosquitoes.
Mosquito-borne illnesses have similar symptoms:
* Fever
* Headache
* Rash
* Body aches
And mosquito-borne illnesses are often mistaken for the flu, but the consequences of these infections can be even more far reaching.
The best way to prevent these illnesses is to protect yourself, your family and pets against mosquitoes.
* Eliminate standing pools of water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs. This includes ponds, holes in tree stumps, bird baths, buckets and anywhere water is not circulating or is not maintained.
* Do your homework. Many mosquito eradication products are marketing gimmicks and produce little to no actual results. “Bug zappers,” ultrasonic devices, nutritional supplements and “mosquito plants” simply don’t work.
While spray-on chemicals can be effective, most strong formulas are not recommended for use on children or pets. Your best bet is to go with a solution that creates a barrier around your entire yard, “masks” you so you’re invisible to mosquitoes and is long lasting.
